When your regular expression solution hits a wall, try this super easy (and reliable) BeautifulSoup program.

from BeautifulSoup import BeautifulSoup

html = "<a> Keep me </a>"
soup = BeautifulSoup(html)

text_parts = soup.findAll(text=True)
text = ''.join(text_parts)
